Manchester United’s recent 2-2 draw with Bournemouth has cast a spotlight on persistent tactical and personnel issues plaguing the team as their quest for a Champions League spot becomes increasingly impossible.

Midfield Mayhem

During the clash at the Vitality Stadium, the midfield vulnerabilities that have dogged United all seasons were once again exposed. Despite Bruno Fernandes’ efforts, which included scoring a close range and a penalty, the team’s midfield structure repeatedly faltered. Kobbie Mainoo, though industrious, often seemed isolated, with Casemiro’s lacklustre performance further exacerbating the problem. The disconnect between United’s lines allowed Bournemouth ample opportunities to exploit spaces, a recurring theme that has led to repeated criticism of manager Erik ten Hag’s tactics.

Leadership and Responsibility

Jamie Redknapp’s comments post-match highlighted concerns around the team’s dynamics and leadership. Redknapp praised Fernandes for his commitment but criticized senior players like Casemiro for setting a poor example for younger talents like Mainoo.

‘He gets a lot of stick, Bruno [Fernandes]. Some of it I get but I also think it’s unfair,’ Redknapp told Sky Sports. He continued ‘When I watch him play, I see a player who genuinely cares, there’s a frustration, yes there’s sometimes pettiness, sometimes he’s calling out his players.’

‘But if I was coming into that club, or if Erik ten Hag keeps his job, he’s the sort of player you want to build the team around, he’s a player, he makes things happen.

‘He cares about the club, the team, I just see a player you can build a team around and I don’t see too many others who are showing the appetite he has.’

‘It’s a culture at the club, I see players, multiple Champions League winners, at times walking around the pitch like they don’t care, and you can’t have that.’

‘I get the culture thing but I’m also big on good players, players who want to care, players who want to run around and do well for their team.’

‘I think if you’ve got the right players in and around him [Fernandes], he’s done it for Portugal, I get his frustrations, it must drive him insane.’

‘You look at the second goal that they conceded by [Justin] Kluivert, he’s trying to get his team up the pitch, and he sees Casemiro walking around and jogging.’

‘Kobbie Mainoo has got to be careful, he doesn’t want to get dragged into that as well, I want to see more energy from him.’

The critique pointed towards a deeper cultural issue within the squad, with some players apparently lacking the drive necessary to propel the team forward during crucial moments.

 Defensive Disarray

The defensive issues were stark, with Diogo Dalot publicly questioning Ten Hag’s assertion that the team’s vulnerability to shots was not a concern.

“It’s been one of our concerns, maybe [we need to] try to be more compact as a team – don’t try to make the gap between defenders and midfield too big,” Dalot told Sky Sports.

He Continued “Sometimes it is, and they counter on the counter-attack. It’s something we have to improve because it’s been nowhere near good enough for the level of this club.

“We’ve been showing belief through the season, coming back from down moments. Too many this season.

“We have to control more and have the game under control, we lose it too many times. That’s the aim for the next couple of games.”

United faced 20 shots from Bournemouth, Only Luton Town (576) have now conceded more efforts than Ten Hag’s side (574) in the Premier League this term, a damning black mark on his tactical set-up. continuing a worrying trend of defensive openness that has not been adequately addressed. This lack of compactness between defense and midfield has been a sore point, contributing to United’s poor form and jeopardizing their chances at a top-four finish. United are now winless in four Premier League games and trail fourth-place Aston Villa by 10 points, with just six fixtures remaining.

 The Youth Promise

Despite the senior team’s struggles, there was a silver lining regarding the club’s youth prospects. Young players like Ethan Wheatley and Habeeb Ogunneye being involved with the first team, even if minimally, signals a continued commitment to nurturing talent. This approach, while not immediately solving on-field issues, fosters long-term sustainability and growth.

 Looking Ahead

With Champions League qualification hanging by a thread and only six league games remaining, the pressure on Ten Hag and his squad is intense. The team needs to find a way to be more composed and assertive in controlling games. The upcoming fixtures are not just about securing points but are also critical for setting a tone for the next season, regardless of which European competition they find themselves in.
